Maritzburg United: 2019-20 PSL Fixtures, results, trophies, squad and latest news

Maritzburg United stunned the Absa Premiership with a sensational fourth-place finish in 2017-18, but struggled to reach those heights again last season.

The Team of Choice propped up the table for most of the season and Fadlu Davids and Muhsin Ertuğral both exited the club, making Eric Tinkler their third head coach of the season. Fortunately for the team from Pietermaritzburg, it was to be a case of third time lucky as the players responded well to Tinkler’s methods and pulled off survival at the last gasp.

Maritzburg should ideally be targeting the top eight in 2019-20, but this task will not be an easy one to fulfill following the departures of star midfielders Fortune Makaringe and Siphesihle Ndlovu to Orlando PIrates.

The Team of Choice needs to adapt quickly and they will hope for a boost from new signings Kwanda Mngonyama and Judas Moseamedi.

Tinkler has opted for an interesting approach to the captaincy question, picking Richard Ofori as his match-day captain and Nazeer Allie as club captain.

The former Orlando Pirates coach explained that one of the reasons for offering the dual captaincy was the lack of guarantee that the club captain would be in the starting XI.

“Richard, a national team goalkeeper for Ghana, is definitely our first-choice goalkeeper, so it made sense to appoint Richard as our match-day captain,” Tinkler told Maritzburg United’s website.

“Then we have the club captain. Who plays even more of an important role because he is representing the players to the club and also to me. And that person will be Nazeer Allie. Because of all his experience.”

One challenge for Tinkler will be motivating his team after key departures. This was one of the issues they struggled to deal with last season.

“For Maritzburg to survive, we need to trade. We don’t have a sponsor. The players’ future is quite important,” owner Farook Kadodia admitted to IOL.

“The player is not going to perform if you hold on to him while he doesn’t want to stay and has offers. It is not about us wanting to get players out.

“If I had the resources to match the offers that the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns can make to players, I would love to keep them.

“So, it is not a situation of us hastily selling players. It is not like I want to make more money out of these players.”

If this is anything to go by, 2019-20 will not be an easy season, but Maritzburg United have seen it all before and lived to tell the tale.

Maritzburg United history

Maritzburg United FC came into existence in 1979 and current owner and chairman Farook Kadodia has been involved with the club since its infancy.

Kadodia was approached by the executive of the old FPL along with businessman Brian Rupram as they looked to keep professional football in the city of Pietermaritzburg following the exit of Maritzburg City.

Maritzburg United were taken over by new owners but then re-acquired by the Farook and Imraan Kadodia in 1997 and they have since transformed the team into an established Premier Division outfit.

Trott Moloto was hired as coach in 2004 and it wasn’t long afterwards before Maritzburg United were in the top flight again following the acquisition of Tembisa Classic.

In their current spell in the top flight, Maritzburg United have survived since 2008-09. Arguably their best achievement to date was the fourth place finish in 2017-18 under the guidance of coach Fadlu Davids.

However, the Team of Choice lost Lebohang Maboe to Mamelodi Sundowns in the off-season following that campaign and struggled to recapture the magic. Siphesihle Ndlovu was incredible in midfield during the 17/18 season, but not quite the same in 2018-19.

It all added up as Maritzburg struggled to recapture that magic. Fadlu Davids paid with his job and Muhsin Ertuğral did not fare any better. However, Eric Tinkler has managed to bring the best out of his team and the possibility of a return to the heights of 2017-18 remains.
