Out-of-favour Kaizer Chiefs defender Lorenzo Gordinho is nearing a return to Bloemfontein Celtic, reports Soccer Laduma.
The 25-year-old spent a short spell on loan at the Free State outfit during the first half of the 2018/19 season.
Gordinho set for spell away from Chiefs
He has been linked with a move away from the Soweto Giants, with rivals Orlando Pirates named among the rumoured suitors.
However, the player’s agent, Mike Makaab told the publication he was busy trying to finalise another loan move to the same club he represented 13 times in the previous campaign, only missing matches through suspension.
“Yeah, I’m just in the process of drawing things up for Lorenzo to join Celtic on loan for the remainder of this season. He needs to be playing, he knows Celtic and Celtic know him – we’re hopeful we can get something finalised before too long.”
Frustration on the sidelines
While Gordinho did not struggle for game time at Celtic, it was a different story upon his Chiefs return in January 2019.
The centre-back has – in the equivalent of a full season back – only mustered up eight league appearances for Amakhosi.
His nosedive down the pecking order has coincided with the reappointment of German mentor, Ernst Middendorp, as well as the return to full fitness of veteran defender Erick Mathoho.
Gordinho last made an appearance for the club during their 2-0 away win over Chippa United back in November.
He has since not featured in five matches across competitions, only making the bench once in that period – in the Telkom Knockout semifinal defeat to Maritzburg United.
Latest Chiefs transfer news
Another Chiefs player who could too return to Celtic is midfielder Kabelo Mahlasela, who has seen no action in the ongoing campaign.
The 28-year-old, who joined from Celtic ahead of the previous season, is yet to add to his 11 Chiefs appearances.
His agent Tshepo Mabona told Soccer Laduma that Phunya Sele Sele is among the frontrunners for his signature.
“Kabelo is in a position now where he needs to be playing, and Kaizer Chiefs have been very understanding of his situation. Both Celtic and Polokwane are currently talking to the club, and only when – or if – an agreement is reached there can we look at the next step.”
Meanwhile, Chiefs have been handed a boost in their reported pursuit of Kenyan international, Anthony Akumu, who recently parted ways with Zambian giants Zesco United.
