FIA World Rallycross Championship: Here’s what you need to know

The SABAT Rallycross of South Africa is about to get real as the FIA World Rallycross Championship will comes to a conclusion at the Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town over this coming weekend.

According to Motorsport Media, this weekend’s FIA World Rallycross title fight promises to be one of the finest racing spectacles yet seen in South Africa, as Swedish brothers, Timmy and Kevin Hansen and Andreas Bakkerud from Norway prepare to battle to decide who is the best in the world.

Yes, on 9 and 10 November 2019 these rivals and the rest of the World Rallycross gladiators will fight it out “aboard wild 600 horsepower, 900Nm turbocharged two-litre all-wheel-drive World Rallycross super cars that weigh just 1 300 kilograms and accelerate to 100km/h quicker than an F1 car, designed to take ultimate punishment, fly high over jumps and engage in epic car-to-car combat.”

FIA World Rallycross Championship: How it works

The Rallycross of South Africa will comprise of four qualifying heats on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Each crucial heat sees five cars starting abreast and racing to determine the twelve semi-finalists through a series of four-lap races.

All heat races, the semi-finals and the final require the drivers to complete one ‘Joker Lap’ – leaving the regular track to tackle a longer loop around an alternative section, on the lap of their choice.

This adds a few seconds to the Joker Lap time, often adding huge excitement as well, with drivers on Joker Laps merging with the regular track as their rivals arrive at full speed too!

The main intrigue this weekend however hinges around that world title fight with the top three separated by just eight championship points and a maximum 30 points on the table.
