Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have both made SoccerBible’s list of the best kits of the past decade.
The two popular outfits have spotted a variety of designs between 2010 and 2019, which have attracted a mixed bag of opinions, as far as the public is concerned.
Soweto giants crack global ‘best kits’ list
Both kits which made the global top 30 list were subject to their fair share of criticism within South African shores, but international pundits seem to hold a different view.
Kaizer Chiefs in the top 20
Chiefs’ current home strip was the subject of some hilarious banter at home when it first leaked ahead of the ongoing campaign but, surprisingly, ranked high according to Unisport‘s best of the season.
It made another global list, cracking the top 20, according to SoccerBible, who placed the trippy design in 13th place.
“As ballsy as it is absurdly trippy,” the publication wrote.
Orlando Pirates pip their rivals
Orlando Pirates, who have gone the retro route over the past decade, did so again ahead of the 2017/18 season.
However, the design reminiscent of 1990s kits worn by reigning Uefa Champions League champs Liverpool and Soweto rivals Moroka Swallows was met with mixed reviews from the public.
Despite that, it ranked even higher in the recent list, cracking the top 10 to sit in eighth place.
“Oh, man. Those EQT stripes on the shoulder,” the publication wrote. “Proper 1991 Liverpool vibes, only even better because it’s in black and belongs to pirates. Badass.”
And the best kit of the decade goes to…
For top honours, the two giants of South African football lost out to some top brands, with Italian giants Juventus appearing twice in the top 10, as their third and fourth kits made seventh and third place, respectively.
The top two spots were occupied by Nigeria – who sent tongues wagging with their recent World Cup kit – as well as Paris Saint Germain’s Jordan collab.
“We tried to pick out something a little more obscure, a little more underrated, but sometimes it’s just too difficult to overlook one of the most successful, significant and damn right best looking football shirts of all time,” SoccerBible said of their choice.
“The collaboration between PSG and the Jordan Brand will define this decade in terms of kit design, and you simply cannot overlook that.”
