Teenager dies, another seriously injured in Gauteng lightning strike | South Africa News

Picture: NSRI website At about 5pm, during a national rowing regatta at Victoria Lake in Germiston and after the regatta had been called off due to thunderstorms and final packing-up was under way, a 19-year-old rowing coach and a 14-year-old schoolboy from a Cape Town school were struck by lightening, NSRI Gauteng station commander Gerhard Potgieter said on Sunday. NSRI Gauteng and Emergency Care ambulance service, in attendance at the regatta, attended at the scene and ER24 ambulance service and Netcare 911 ambulance service also responded. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) efforts commenced on the 19-year-old instructor, he said. The 14-year-old schoolboy was treated on the scene before being transported to hospital by ambulance in serious but a stable condition. “Sadly, despite extensive CPR efforts, the 19-year-old male has been declared deceased.
