Newborn rescued from storm drain in South Africa with umbilical cord still attached

A newborn baby was miraculously saved from a storm drain in South Africa after a bystander heard her cries and called for help.

It took nearly four-hours for rescue workers to pull the baby girl — who nearby residents named Sibanisethu (Our Ray of Light) and Gabriella — out of the drain, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo of KZN Health MEC said in a statement.

She still had her umbilical cord attached and is suspected to be aged between one and three days old.

Video footage captured the baby being pulled out from the drain, prompting clapping and cheering from people watching on.

After paramedics removed her from the drain, she was airlifted her to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital and needed to be warmed up after long exposure to cold temperatures.

The hospital’s trauma specialist, Dr Timothy Hardcastle, said the baby was in satisfactory condition and only suffered minor injuries, according to the statement.
